Chlorosulfonic Acid Pump Control System


Based on the characteristics of chlorosulfonic acid and the customer's requirement for a 1-control-8 valveless pump control system, 

the following provides a professional analysis from three perspectives: technical feasibility, system configuration optimization, potential risks,

 and improvement suggestions:


I. Technical Feasibility Analysis

Media Compatibility

Chlorosulfonic acid has a viscosity close to that of water (approximately 1-2 mPa·s) and is highly corrosive (pH approximately -1). Material

 compatibility verification is crucial:


Zirconium oxide pump valve core: Suitable for strong acid environments, but it is important to confirm whether the chlorosulfonic acid

 contains fluoride ions. (If so, PTFE or silicon carbide should be used.)


SS316 housing: Standard 316 stainless steel can withstand chlorosulfonic acid at room temperature, but long-term use requires a temperature

 control of ≤40°C (to avoid localized overheating that accelerates corrosion).


PTFE seal: Fully compatible with chlorosulfonic acid, but ensure the sealing surface is smooth (Ra ≤ 0.4μm) to prevent penetration. Flow 

Accuracy and Stability

Plunger Pump Structure: Suitable for micro-dosing (12.5 ml/min), but the dead volume in the pump head must be verified 

(recommended ≤ 0.5 ml) to reduce carryover.

Adjustment 10-20: If this refers to the flow adjustment range (e.g., 1.25-2.5 ml/min), pulse width modulation (PWM) or stepper motor 

microcontroller control is required through a PLC.

1-to-8 Synchronicity: Flow deviation when connected in parallel must be verified (recommended ≤ ±2%). Closed-loop control can be 

achieved through flow sensor feedback.


II. System Configuration Optimization Recommendations

Hardware Selection

PLC Module: Siemens S7-1200 (with 8 high-speed pulse outputs) or Mitsubishi FX5U (supporting floating-point operations) is 

recommended to ensure independent control of multiple channels.

Touchscreen: 7 inches or larger is recommended (such as the Weiluntong TK6071iP). It supports multi-page switching to display 

individual flow rates, accumulated flow, and alarm information. Communication Module: If remote monitoring is required, a 4G/WiFi 

module (such as the Siemens CP1243-1) can be added, or a host computer can be connected via RS485 using the Modbus RTU protocol.

Key Parameter Settings

Flow Calibration: Each pump must be calibrated individually (using an electronic balance or high-precision flowmeter is recommended), 

and a flow-rate-pulse frequency curve established.

Temperature Control: Although the medium is at room temperature, heating of the pump head may affect flow stability. Therefore, it is

 recommended to add housing temperature monitoring (PT100 sensor) and a cooling fan.

Cleaning Function: An automatic cleaning program (such as flushing the pipeline with ethanol) should be configured to prevent 

chlorosulfonic acid crystals from clogging the pump head.


III. Potential Risks and Improvement Solutions

Corrosion Risk

Risk Point: After long-term operation, SS316 threaded connections may experience stress corrosion cracking.

Improvement Solution: Use Hastelloy C-276 or PTFE-lined pipes to reduce metal-to-metal contact.

Seal Failure

Risk Point: PTFE seals may wear and leak under high-frequency reciprocating motion. Improvement: Use a double O-ring seal structure 

or switch to a hydraulically driven diaphragm pump (such as the ProMinent Concert series) to completely isolate the medium from the seal.

Flow Drift

Risk: Plunger pump wear or temperature changes may cause flow rate degradation.

Improvement: Add a flow compensation algorithm (such as temperature-based PID auto-tuning) or perform regular automatic calibration

 (such as daily zero calibration).
