Detailed explanation of the working principle of magnetic pump

A magnetic pump is a pump that realizes contactless power transmission through magnetic coupling, which completely eliminates the 

leakage risk of traditional mechanical seal pumps and is particularly suitable for conveying toxic, flammable, explosive, corrosive or

 precious liquids.


1. Core structure

A magnetic pump is mainly composed of the following three parts:


Drive end (external magnetic rotor)

Installed on the motor shaft, it is composed of permanent magnets (such as NdFeB) or electromagnets, and generates a magnetic field 

when rotating.

Analogy: It can be regarded as a "magnetic engine" that transmits power through a magnetic field.

Isolation sleeve (static seal)

Located between the external magnetic rotor and the internal magnetic rotor, it is made of non-magnetic, corrosion-resistant materials

 (such as stainless steel, titanium alloy).

Function: Completely isolate the medium from the external environment to prevent leakage.

Driven end (internal magnetic rotor)

Installed on the pump shaft, directly connected to the impeller, and made of permanent magnets or soft magnetic materials.

Working mode: Synchronously rotate under the magnetic field of the external magnetic rotor to drive the impeller to rotate.


2. Working principle

Magnetic field coupling

The motor drives the outer magnetic rotor to rotate, and the magnetic field of the outer magnetic rotor passes through the isolation 

sleeve and acts on the inner magnetic rotor.

Key point: The magnetic field is the "power bridge" to achieve contactless transmission.

Contactless transmission

There is no mechanical contact between the outer magnetic rotor and the inner magnetic rotor, which avoids the shaft seal wear and 

leakage problems of traditional pumps.

Advantages: zero leakage and low maintenance.

Fluid transportation

The impeller rotates under the drive of the inner magnetic rotor, and the liquid is sucked into the pump body and discharged 

from the outlet after acceleration.

Process: Similar to traditional centrifugal pumps, but the power transmission method is different.


3. Characteristics of magnetic pumps

4. Application scenarios

Chemical industry: conveying corrosive media such as acid, alkali, and salt.

Pharmaceutical industry: conveying sterile, high-purity liquids.

Petrochemical industry: conveying flammable and explosive liquids.

Environmental protection industry: conveying sewage, waste liquid, etc.


5. Precautions

No idling

Idling will cause the temperature of the internal magnetic rotor to rise, which may damage the permanent magnet.

Solution: Install a low liquid level protection device.

Avoid granular media

Particles will get stuck in the impeller or wear the isolation sleeve, causing pump damage.

Solution: Install a filter to ensure the media is clean.

High temperature limit

Permanent magnets may demagnetize at high temperatures, and high temperature resistant materials (such as samarium cobalt) must

 be selected.

Data: Ordinary NdFeB magnets have a temperature resistance of about 80-120℃, and samarium cobalt magnets have a temperature

 resistance of about 250-350℃.

Installation requirements

The pump shaft and motor shaft must be concentric to avoid vibration and wear.

Recommendation: Use a coupling or elastic support.
